The Ultraman (1979) Episode 34: Breakout at the Prison Planet Part 1 – The Monsters are Loose!

It is time for The Ultraman Episode 34: Breakout at Prison Planet Part 1: The Monsters are Loose!

Floating through space is a barren planet with a base on it. Trapped inside this planet? A bunch of monsters that look like they’re having the most awesome party ever. Or they’re fighting each other. Space ships suddenly appear in the sky and invade the planet, taking it over. Back on Planet U40, we find out that the strange planet is actually a prison planet for monsters created by the Ultras and that a race called the Invaders have taken control of it and flown off with it so it can’t be remote controlled back to its spot on the edge of the universe. Worse still, the planet is set to self destruct after 20 hours so the Ultra King wants to know where the hell it went.

Gee, I wonder.

On Earth, the Science Defense Squad gets news from the space station that an object a bit smaller than the moon is hurtling towards them. It turns out to be the prison planet but kind of stops in midair instead of colliding with Earth. The space station sends a team out to investigate the planet but when contact is lost, the captain sends Marume and Tobe to find them.

After landing, Marume and Tobe find the space station ship, but it has been destroyed. The team survived and warn the two about the giant monsters that are roaming the surface. One appears and attacks, destroying the rocket that the SDS members used to get up there, depriving them of a way home.

It’s a bat, man!

When the captain hears of this, the rest of the team gets in the Super Maddock to retrieve them. However, a bat monster leaves the prison planet and heads towards Earth so they go to intercept it instead. The Maddock is damaged and forced to make an emergency landing. The team deploys in the fighters to attack the monster and Hikari turns into Ultraman and defeats it. Ultraman tells him that the prison planet is a creation of the Ultras and they are responsible for the monsters being on it.

When the Invaders start transporting more monsters to Earth, Ultraman has Hikari change once more even though his energy is still depleted to fight them. However, the three monster are too strong for him and it seems that this is going to be the end of Ultraman! Also, if they don’t get the planet away, it is going to explode and destroy half of the Earth! Elec and Noto are on their way but will they arrive in time?

This was definitely an action-packed part one of this two-part episode. There are so many monsters just fighting each other for fun on the prison planet that it is a treat to watch. And they all have unique designs, which is even better. I’m not quite sure why the Ultras left a planet like that completely unattended, even with a self-destruct on it that seems like an irresponsible thing to do. “Hey everyone, here are a ton of mean space monsters. Come and get them.”

I’m curious to see how the second episode goes and if they just let all of those monsters blow up too. I mean, they usually don’t mind killing them but man, what a mean way to go.

That’s all for this installment. See you next time for the next installment, Ultra Fans!
